The musical adaptation, The Lion King entered the Broadway world with a unique technique; critics state that the show, beginning with its opening night, had utilized new elements that were unusual in old theater and become more than a musical. With its execution and blend of choreography, costume, and largely 3D puppetry, it turned into a very distinct show rivaling to all previous and future musicals. Because the plot of this stage adaptation has animals as the characters, mainly the little lion cub Simba and lighthearted turned courageous life story, the challenge for the creative team was to bring this tale to life on stage without looking fake. Julie Taymor, The Lion King’s director, embraced this task and also embraced the art of creating puppets, masterfully utilizing life-sized animal puppets for the live depiction combined with accurate costumes based on African tribes that dignified the musical.
Today, The Lion King has truly gained its position as one of the most sought-after musicals in the world. With two seasons worldwide that have been performing for over a decade and counting, and four other runs that have been running for more than 20 years, the longtime musical carries on to reach new audiences in new countries. The musical has gained consistently positive reviews from from both viewers and theater experts alike in its tours, while garnering numerous awards and accolades, including but not limited to Tony Awards and Helpmann Awards.
Since its debut in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1997 and eventual transfer to Broadway, New York in October of 1997, the musical has become boundless with its tours over several countries. Spanning several tours for over two decades, it has been produced in several cities with both local U.S. and international tours, spanning locales in Europe including Spain, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and even Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, and Singapore in Asia to name a few in a very extensive list of countries.
