Why, invite all three of them to the ceremony, of course!

“Who knew that the songs of ABBA held the solutions to so many of life’s little quandaries?” – Variety

Mamma Mia! is two and a half hours of a heartfelt musical comedy directed by the great Phyllida Lloyd, following a refined book written by Catherine Johnson. It also features a score by ABBA co-founders Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus’, which itself showcases the iconic Swedish supergroup’s most influential songs, including “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” and the GRAMMY Hall of Fame hit “Dancing Queen.”

“Donna has gone through the loss of her greatest love. She fears losing her daughter as well. Donna makes choices regarding truth to protect herself. While some think that the story of MAMMA MIA! is a terrific jukebox musical (and they are correct) it’s also a story of finding one’s identity amidst loss and life,” lead star Christine Sherrill shared in an interview.

As for its supporting team of actors, the production lists the following swings, ensembles, and understudies: Gabe Amato, Adia Olanethia Bell, Xavi Soto Burgos, Emily Croft, Madison Deadman, Jordan De Leon, Nico DiPrimio, Patrick Dunn, Stephanie Genito, Tassy Kirbas, Danny Lopez-Alicea, Makoa, Faith Northcutt, Jasmine Overbaugh, Gray Phillips, Blake Price, Dorian Quinn, and Amy Weaver.

The Mamma Mia! musical first sounded the bells at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999 before ultimately transferring to the Novello Theatre, where it still performs to this day as West End’s 6th longest-running franchise. Its original series of shows was a critical success, clinching a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role and a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

In 2001, the production skipped and sang its way to the Winter Garden Theatre for its official Broadway debut, following initial engagements in Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago. It was similarly acclaimed as its London counterpart, receiving three nominations from the Drama Desk Awards and five from the Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. After relocating to the Broadhurst Theatre for the rest of its stint, Mamma Mia! would later become the longest-running jukebox musical in Broadway history at the end of nearly 5,800 box-office-breaking performances.

Since then, the production has proliferated in each continent (barring Antarctica, mind you!), establishing a foothold in over FIFTY countries. It has been experienced in at least SIXTEEN languages by more than 65 MILLION people and has grossed $4 BILLION across all its stage adaptations. Mamma Mia! was also delivered to the silver screen in 2008, featuring an ensemble cast led by Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Colin Firth. A multi-awarded smash hit, it spawned a critically acclaimed sequel titled “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” in 2018, with much of the cast reprising their roles.
